MU kicks off historic $600 million comprehensive campaign

Sept. 19, 2003

The University of Missouri-Columbia launched today the public phase of its comprehensive campaign, “For All We Call Mizzou,” and announced that nearly $335 million of the campaign’s $600 million goal already has been raised.

“This announcement today is indeed an historic event,” said David Housh, vice chancellor for Development and Alumni Relations. “We begin today the public phase of the largest comprehensive campaign in the history of the University System. This campaign will change the face of education on this campus, the state, the nation and the world.”

Money raised during the campaign will be used to support four major categories — students, faculty, programs and facilities. Because of its comprehensive approach, “For All We Call Mizzou” will generate resources for all areas of the university, including schools and colleges, MU Libraries, life sciences, intercollegiate athletics and other university projects.

“We are committed to building upon our strengths,” said MU Chancellor Richard Wallace. “However, we must have private financial assistance to break beyond the ‘good’ mold to become a truly great university, nationally renowned for multiple programs, stellar faculty and the brightest students.”

Nearly 300 volunteers have helped with various aspects of the campaign. Many of the students worked with the colleges and schools to plan program priorities. Twelve MU students from a variety of academic programs form the “For All We Call Mizzou Swing Choir,” which made its premiere at the campaign kickoff celebration. The group sang the campaign theme song, which was written by Jack Smith, a loyal alumnus who gives generously of his time to support MU. Jann Carl, a graduate of MU’s School of Journalism and host of Entertainment Tonight emceed the entertainment portion of the kick-off dinner on Francis Quadrangle immediately following the announcement. She introduced the campaign video which her company produced for the campaign.

“The University of Missouri has arrived at a new and historic milestone,” said UM System President Elson Floyd. “An uncertain economy and increasing competition among public colleges and universities for limited resources represent daunting challenges, but they can be overcome. With the unparalleled support and enthusiasm of our loyal alumni and friends, I am convinced that we can move this great University into the upper tier of outstanding public research universities in the nation.”

Rounding out the weekend's activities, MU schools and colleges will hold open houses to host visitors Saturday morning from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m., followed by a tailgate party in the tent on Francis Quadrangle before the football Tigers take on Middle Tennessee State University.
