Student Accomplishments

Small-town student teacher takes on big-city classrooms
Meghan Bedford, an elementary-education major from Mexico, Mo., spent her senior year working with children in an inner-city Kansas City school. She was a pioneer for the Senior Year On-Site Program (SYOSP) — among the first Mizzou students to work as a student teacher in Kansas City.
Bedford was able to take advantage of the rare opportunity thanks to a Flagship Scholarship. The Flagship Scholars Program, established to eventually provide a full-ride scholarship to at least one student in every county of Missouri, helped ensure that she could pay for rent and gas while completing the unpaid internship. One of four original Flagship Scholars, she received $15,000.
Since earning her bachelor’s degree, Bedford has returned to Mizzou for graduate school while completing a fellowship program in a Hallsville, Mo., elementary school.
